Past Presidents' Messages (2021/22)

Sharon Chan, 2021/22

Dear Friends,

Before I introduce the newly appointed Executive Committee (EXCO) 21/22, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the previous EXCO consisting of Kathleen Teo, Lauren Goh, Yun Kei Chow, Andrew Young, Remus Joel Wong, Tan Jing Yan, and Phoenix Gay.

Their hard work and contribution to this Society have resulted in the growth of UKSLSS and it is with great privilege that my team and I have the opportunity to carry on their good work.

The incoming EXCO 21/22 consists of myself, Isaac Ng, Yeo Zhi Kai, Pamela Low, Fernanda Chia, Kelvin Ng and Thomas Lim. Last year was indeed a difficult time for all.

However, with the situation slowly improving in the United Kingdom, my team and I hope to bring back a semblance of normalcy. As the UK opens up, the Society will follow carefully and provide more in-person opportunities for you to connect with other members as well as with the legal community both within the UK and in Singapore. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with a Society that represents and supports your needs, regardless of which university you are in and which career path you are keen to embark on. To begin the Academic Year, the EXCO has planned a series of events that hopefully provides you with the support you need to better prepare for your life in law.

Opportunities to get involved in the works of UKSLSS: University Representatives and Sub-Committees

We will be inviting members, mainly our freshers, to serve as University Representatives. As a University Representative, you will be involved in helping moderate networking events with our sponsor firms, relaying UKSLSS updates to members in your university and more! Since the UKSLSS is likely to hold more in-person events, University Representatives will definitely be more involved in helping run and represent the UKSLSS in these events.

Concurrently, we will be opening up applications for the Editorial and Marketing Sub-Committees. Similarly, these Sub-Committees provide great opportunities to work with other members in the Society and even create connections with our sponsor firms and lawyers.

Do keep a lookout for more details and announcements regarding these opportunities on our social media channels. And if you have not already done so, definitely give our new UKSLSS Telegram Channel a follow!

Careers: Exclusive Sponsor Firm Recruitment Events, Webinars and More!

As we do every year, we are hosting the SYNC Vacation Scheme Helpdesk virtually on 24th October 2021. The Helpdesk will feature a panel of Singaporean law graduates who are Trainee Solicitors working in the UK. The discussions will surround their reasons for choosing to work in the UK, application tips for vac schemes and what students can do now to prepare for applications. Last year we had a mix of graduates from different firms in the UK, including firms listed in the Magic Circle.

We will also be organising networking events with our sponsors, such as Rajah & Tann and Clifford Chance Singapore. These will take the form of online webinars and networking sessions, one to one mentorship programme with Clifford Chance lawyers, and in-person summer time events. The EXCO is hoping to hold these networking events in a myriad of ways to keep you well engaged with law firms back in Singapore.

The EXCO is also planning to hold a Moot competition between our members. We found that many of you are keen to improve your advocacy skills and thus we are planning to organise competitions that will cater to your interests. Keep a lookout on our Instagram (@theukslss) stories as we will be posting polls to find out more about the areas of law that you are interested in!

The academic year will once again culminate in the 15th Singapore Legal Forum ("SLF") on 20 August 2022. It is uncertain whether it will take place online or in-person, though we definitely hope to hold it in-person. Nonetheless, the SLF will consists of speakers from various firms in Singapore including the Big Four, and there will be opportunities for members to ask questions and participate in networking sessions with our sponsor firms.

The Editorial Committee:

The Singapore Comparative Law Review (“SCLR”), is our Society’s flagship student-run legal journal that has once again achieved great recognition and success. Thomas, our Editor-in-Chief, is looking to further raise the quality of pieces and profile of the SCLR through various initiatives, such as providing training for editors and writers. He will also continue to invite esteemed members legal community to be guest writers for the 2022 edition. As such, the SCLR is a great way for you to be engaged with legal issues both in the UK and Singapore and improve your academic writing skills either as an SCLR editor or writer.

Aside from the SCLR, Thomas has plans to create a centralised and more engaging platform for members to stay updated with the legal developments in Singapore and the UK. He aims to set up a blog which will likely be hosted on our current UKSLSS website. He believes that this will have the twin benefits of having a single platform that can be updated easily and frequently, and that can promulgate various forms of media as clickable pieces (e.g. interviews, case notes, news updates). Applications to be a Writer or Editor for the blog will open soon so be sure to keep an eye out for that!

Concluding Remarks

While this list of initiatives is non-exhaustive and there will definitely be more events organised, we hope that it piques your interest and motivates you to participate in the Society. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at president@ukslss.com. Once again, thank you UKSLSS EXCO 2020/2021 for your hard work and dedication, and I present to you the newly elected UKSLSS EXCO 2021/2022 for the Academic Year ahead!

Yours Sincerely,
