President's Message (2025/26)

Joshua Chang, 2025/26

Dear Friends,

As we begin a new academic year, we acknowledge the outstanding work of the previous Executive Committee during Alyson’s term. Their dedication has left a strong legacy for us to build upon, and my committee and I are eager to carry this momentum forward.

It is my privilege to introduce the 26th Executive Committee of the United Kingdom Singapore Law Students’ Society (“UKSLSS”) for the 2025/2026 Academic Year: I, Joshua Chang (KCL) as President, Min Sittman (Cambridge) as Vice-President, Neil Karnik (KCL) as General Secretary, Christian Ng (Oxford) as Sponsorships Director, Annika Yeo (UCL) as Finance Director, Emily Leow (QMUL) as Marketing Director, and Natasha Wong (KCL) as Editor-in-Chief.

Our mission remains clear: to serve the interests of Singaporean law students in the UK by providing a balance of professional opportunities and social connections. We aim to build a community where members can not only develop through career-related initiatives but also feel a strong sense of belonging while studying abroad. The UKSLSS hopes to be a steady companion on this journey, offering support and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

New Events and Continued Activities

The UKSLSS stands at the intersection of professional development and community, and this year our aim is to strengthen both pillars while charting new directions for the Society. We want our members to see the UKSLSS not only as a platform for career opportunities but also as a network that supports them throughout their time in the UK and beyond.

Professional growth will remain at the heart of our work. Our Legal Careers Helpdesk will once again bring together barristers and solicitors to share their journeys, giving members valuable insight into pupillages, vacation schemes, and navigating careers in both Singapore and the UK. We are also looking to expand the range of career events and competitions on offer, providing members with more opportunities to engage directly with practitioners and sharpen their skills.

At the same time, we are committed to building and sustaining strong professional networks. Our collaborations with international firms remain robust, with recent engagements including the Latham & Watkins’ Asia event in London as well as open houses with Freshfields and Clifford Chance. In the year ahead, we will expand the number of partnerships and deepen our existing collaborations.

We will also continue to support routes into practice in Singapore by working closely with local institutions, including law firms and public bodies such as the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE). These collaborations will give our members opportunities to network and remain informed about career options back home.

Equally important is the sense of community and belonging we create. Beyond professional initiatives, our Freshers’ Tea and Chinese New Year Dinner will provide spaces for members to meet, share experiences, and build friendships. These gatherings remind us that while our career ambitions are significant, so too are the bonds we form with one another.

Our flagship event, the Singapore Legal Forum in August 2026, will bring together leading practitioners, headline speakers from our sponsor firms, and a career fair that connects members with the profession at the highest level. It remains a hallmark of our Society’s ability to convene the legal community and place our members at its centre.

As we look ahead, my committee and I are committed to ensuring that every Singaporean law student in the UK finds both opportunity and belonging in the UKSLSS. This Society is more than its events. It is a community that will continue to support, connect and empower its members for years to come.

Opportunities: University Representatives and Sub-Committees

The UKSLSS extends a warm invitation to members to join our sub-committees, where they can engage with the Society, build valuable skills, and contribute meaningfully to the student community.

University Representatives are a vital part of the UKSLSS, serving as the link between the Executive Committee and our wider membership. They bring our events directly to their peers and ensure strong engagement at each university. They also represent the Society within their campuses by building connections and fostering a sense of community among Singaporean students.

Our University Representatives play an active role not only in promoting our initiatives but also in contributing to the planning of major events such as the Freshers’ Tea and the Chinese New Year Dinner. They are central to the Society’s outreach, helping to make the UKSLSS a community that spans across universities in the UK.

The Marketing Committee is crucial in ensuring the visibility and success of our events. Without their efforts, our initiatives would not reach the wider community we aim to serve.  This year, the Marketing Committee will once again be recruiting Marketing Executives to work alongside our Marketing Director in driving publicity for the Society’s activities. Through creative and engaging content paired with consistent outreach, the team will play a key role in shaping the UKSLSS brand and ensuring our events connect with a wider audience. At the same time, members of the committee will gain hands-on experience in communication, design, and strategy, developing skills that extend well beyond their time in university.

Our Editorial Committee will once again play a central role in producing content for the Society. Beyond publishing blogs, the team will be rolling out short newsletters to keep members updated on key legal developments in Singapore and the UK. Guided by our Editor-in-Chief, the committee will also contribute to the upcoming edition of the Singapore Comparative Law Review (SCLR), giving members the chance to gain meaningful editorial experience alongside their involvement in UKSLSS publications.

Closing Remarks

As we move into this new academic year, the UKSLSS will continue to grow as both a professional resource and a supportive community. Our events are designed to provide guidance in navigating the legal profession while also creating spaces for friendships and networks to develop. Above all, the UKSLSS remains a key avenue for Singaporean law students in the UK to connect with one another through both professional opportunities and shared experiences.

We hope your time with the Society will be one of learning, growth and lasting friendships, and we look forward to walking this journey with you in the year ahead.

Yours Faithfully,
Joshua Chang
President

ABOUT US

The United Kingdom Singapore Law Students' Society is a student-run society that connects Singaporean law students in the UK. We organise both social and professional events, such that members are in touch with the legal scene back home even when abroad. In addition to our sponsors and Board of Advisors, UKSLSS is made up of a dedicated Executive Committee and various sub-committees. Together, students and lawyers ensure that UKSLSS members have access to legal and career-related information from both countries.
